At this location in Suffolk it was necessary for a failed septic tank to be replaced with a sewage treatment plant installation.  The existing septic tank served a pair of semi-detached cottages located at Darsham in Suffolk.

Mantair was originally contacted by one of the homeowners regarding a complaint they had received regarding the effluent from their septic tank causing pollution in an adjacent field.  Upon inspection, it was evident that untreated effluent was collecting in a depressed area of the adjacent field, causing a serious health hazard.

The existing septic tank was constructed from brickwork.  During the septic tank survey Mantair engineers identified that the septic tank had been damaged and was not functioning correctly, resulting in untreated effluent passing through to the receiving soakaway.  It is most likely that the damage to the septic tank was the cause for the soakaway failure.

Mantair engineers have a wealth of experience in dealing with damaged drainage systems, and the damage to the septic tank at this location was considered to be consistent with accidental damage.  Working in partnership with the UK’s leading drainage insurance claims management company Mantair offers a unique insurance claims management service. Providing expertise in managing insurance claims for the costs of repairing or replacing damaged drainage systems, we work on behalf of property owners helping them to save thousands of pounds in resolving their septic tank problems.

With each of the cottages having three bedrooms, we recommended, in accordance with the British Water Flows and Loads Code of Practice – 4, the installation of a ten person Tricel sewage treatment plant.

Due to the site restrictions it was necessary for the Tricel sewage treatment plant to be installed within a paved area.  To ensure the visual impact on the garden was kept to a minimum we installed the air blower for the system remotely from the tank.  As a standard, the air blower and housing supplied with the Tricel system is located on the top of the tank.

Due to the depth of the existing foul drainage, it was necessary for the tank excavation to be three metres deep.  The quality of effluent discharged from the Tricel sewage treatment plant is clean enough to drain directly into a natural watercourse, and at this location in Suffolk we discharged the treated effluent into a roadside ditch.  With the drainage from the cottages being deeper than the depth of receiving ditch, it was necessary for the Tricel sewage treatment plant to have a ‘pumped’ outlet.

Prior to any ancillary works commencing, Mantair engineers scanned the proposed location of the Tricel sewage treatment plant and areas where any excavations were taking place to ensure that no underground services were present.

As part of the project we liaised with the Environment Agency and the local Building Control department to obtain the relevant approvals for the installation.

On completion of the ancillary works, we commissioned the Tricel sewage treatment plant, including setting of air valves, checking all pipe work joints and viewing the discharge into the roadside ditch.

All machinery was removed from site with the garden being left in a neat and tidy manner.
