Septic Tank Conversion – Suffolk

We were contacted by the owners of a Cottage in the village of Sproughton near Ipswich, with a view to resolving the problems being experienced with their septic tank overflowing to a nearby ditch.

After discussing the problems being experienced by the homeowner, we arranged to carry-out a free site inspection. Upon inspection, it was found that the property drained to a ‘brick built’ septic tank located in the front garden of the property.  On internal inspection of the septic tank it was found that the septic tank was in good structural condition and had an operating capacity of approximately 3500 litres.

As a result of the septic tank discharging to a nearby ditch there was high levels of ‘untreated’ effluent polluting the watercourse, causing a potential health risk.  A discharge of this type from a septic tank contravenes the Environment Agency’s General Binding Rules.

With the existing septic tank being in good structural condition and sufficient capacity, we recommended the installation of a septic tank conversion system.  The Mantair conversion unit is specifically designed to fit within an existing septic tank or cesspool, effectively ‘converting’ the existing tank into a small sewage treatment plant.  The treated effluent produced from the Mantair unit complies with the requirements of the Environment Agency for discharge to a natural watercourse.

The installation of the Mantair septic tank conversion unit saved the homeowners thousands of pounds when compared to other quotations they had received for the installation of packaged sewage treatment plants. The installation of the Mantair system also caused minimal disruption to the garden as no heavy machinery was required to carry-out the project.

Mantair provides a comprehensive septic tank and sewage treatment plant service.  This includes free site inspections, guidance and advice on the most suitable system for the client’s requirements, complete installation, commissioning and full after sales care.

Septic Tank Problem in Cambridgeshire

Building Contractors identified septic tank problems at this property in Cambridgeshire during renovation works. The building contractors recommended the homeowner contact Mantair regarding the septic tank problems.

From our site investigations it was evident that the septic tank problems were being caused due to the soakaway connected to the tank failing. As a result of the soakaway failure the septic tank was flooding, causing the foul drainage from the property to surcharge. The septic tank cover slab also had high levels of sulphate corrosion.

On viewing the Ordnance Survey Geological Map for this area of Cambridgeshire it was evident that the sub-strata was permeable. In view of this and the access restrictions at the property, Mantair engineers recommended upgrading the existing septic tank with a Mantair conversion unit and the construction of a new ‘high level’ soakaway / drainage field. It was also agreed that a new concrete cover slab should be constructed to make the septic tank structurally sound. It was necessary for Mantair engineers to carry out Percolation Tests to determine the porosity of the sub-strata and to obtain the size of soakaway / drainage field required.

Stage 3 – Construction of the new septic tank top and associated ancillary works.

One of the key benefits with installing a Mantair septic tank conversion unit is that it fits within the existing tank removing the need for a new tank to be installed.

Septic Tank Problem in Suffolk Solved!

After years of putting up with septic tank problems the owners of a property at Halesworth in Suffolk, decided enough was enough!  They were advised to contact Mantair by their tanker company to resolve the septic tank problems.

From our initial telephone discussions, it was evident that a site visit was required to ascertain the reasons for the septic tank problems.  On inspection, it was found that the septic tank was completely surcharged due to the soakaway failing.  On emptying of the septic tank it became apparent that the internal baffle within the tank had become dislodged, thus preventing proper separation to take place within the tank.  As a result, solids and fat had passed into the soakaway field causing it to fail.

With the tank no longer able to function as a septic tank it was decided to ‘convert’ the existing tank with a Mantair septic tank conversion unit, thus converting the tank into a small sewage treatment plant.  With no watercourse being available for the disposal of the treated effluent and this area of Suffolk being on a permeable sub~strata, Mantair engineers recommended the construction of a new ‘high level’ soakaway / irrigation field.  As with all soakaway / irrigation systems, it was necessary for Mantair engineers to carry out Percolation Tests to determine the porosity of the sub-strata and to obtain the size of soakaway / irrigation field required.

Stage 5 – Backfilling all excavations and leaving the garden in a neat and tidy manner

One of the key benefits of installing a Mantair septic tank conversion unit is that it fits within the existing tank removing the need for a new tank to be installed.

Apart from the financial savings of installing a Mantair conversion unit when compared to the installation of a packaged sewage treatment plant, the disturbance to the garden at this Suffolk property was kept to a minimum.

Septic tank conversion system installation in Essex.

Mantair was contacted by the owner of a property regarding the problems they were experiencing with their septic tank system.  The property is located on the outskirts of Brentwood in Essex.

On inspection of the drainage arrangements it was found that the property drained to a septic tank located in the rear garden of the property.  On internal inspection of the septic tank it was evident that a submersible pump had been installed within the tank with the sewage effluent being pumped directly to a boundary ditch.  It transpired that the previous owners of the property had installed the pump due to the septic tank soakaway failing.

On further inspection it was found that the existing septic tank was in good structural condition but there was insufficient land available for the construction of a new soakaway.   It was therefore necessary for a sewage treatment system to be installed which would produce a treated effluent suitable for discharge to the boundary ditch.

With the existing septic tank being in good structural condition and sufficient capacity Mantair recommended the installation of a septic tank conversion system.

To minimise the disturbance to the garden the existing pumping main was reused with a new pumping station being installed and connected at the ‘head’ of the pumping main.  The air blower for the Mantair septic tank conversion unit was positioned within a Beehive blower housing – a purpose built housing designed to blend into the garden setting.

Prior to any works commencing Mantair obtain a Permit from the Environment Agency for the discharge to the boundary ditch.

As with the majority of Mantair septic tank conversion system installations, the disturbance to the garden was minimal with substantial cost savings when compared to the installation of a packaged sewage treatment plant.

Mantair provides a comprehensive septic tank and sewage treatment plant service throughout the majority of the UK. This includes free site inspections, guidance and advice on the most suitable system for the client’s requirements, complete installation, commissioning and full after sales care.
