Septic Tank Problem in Surrey

After moving into a property with septic tanks problems in Surrey the new homeowners needed to find a waste water solution to replace a failed septic tank. The homeowners were recommended to contact Mantair to resolve their septic tank problems. Providing free site assessment visits, Mantair can assess all septic tank problems in Surrey.

After a brief telephone conversation with the client it was evident that a site inspection was required to ascertain the cause for the septic tank problem.  Upon inspection, it was found that the septic tank was surcharged and causing the foul drainage from this Surrey property to ‘back up’.  On emptying of the septic tank it became apparent that the internal baffle within the tank had collapsed, thus preventing proper separation to take place within the tank.  As a result of the septic tank baffle collapsing, solids and floating material had passed into the soakaway drainage field causing it to choke.

With the tank not being able to function as a septic tank and the clients preference to have a new tank installed in the front garden, Mantair engineers recommended the installation of a six person Tricel sewage treatment tank; this being based on the property having four bedrooms and in accordance with the British Water Flows & Loads Code of Practice.  The Tricel tank is a ‘one piece’ packaged sewage treatment plant and is designed to produce a final treated effluent suitable for discharge to a ditch, stream or river.

Mantair engineers scanned the ground to identify all underground services prior to works commencing.  With the existing septic tank being positioned in the rear garden it was necessary to divert the foul drainage to the location of the new Tricel plant in the front garden. The majority of septic tank and sewage treatment plant installations require deep excavations and trenching for new drainage pipes. Therefore, it is crucial that all underground services are identified and remain undamaged throughout the duration of excavations.

As with all septic tank and sewage treatment plant installations Mantair conducts in Surrey, the Tricel plant was installed with a concrete surround to protect the structural integrity of the tank.  An independent RCD protected power supply was installed from the property to the Tricel, with the relevant NICEIC Certification being obtained.

A new discharge drain was installed and connected to the Tricel plant allowing the treated effluent to drain direct into a nearby ditch. The existing septic tank was de-commissioned and infilled.

Prior to the project being completed the local Building Control officer inspected the works, approved all elements of the project and issued a Building Notice Certificate.

The installation of the Tricel sewage treatment plant solved the septic tank problems at this Surrey location and provides the homeowners with an environmental way of disposing with their waste water.

Case Study – Guildford, Surrey.

We were approached by the owner of a small business park in Surrey regarding a broken sewage treatment plant and the problems being experienced with the foul drainage system serving the park.

After lengthy discussions with the client it was apparent that the existing sewage treatment plant had failed and was causing pollution in a nearby watercourse. Mantair engineers recommended a site inspection be carried out to determine the cause for the sewage treatment plant failing.

Survey & Design

On inspecting the existing sewage treatment plant Mantair engineers identified that the plant incorporated a biological filter. The biological filter is designed to promote the growth of aerobic micro-organisms which ‘treat’ the sewage. After emptying the sewage treatment plant it was evident that the biological filter had collapsed, and as a result, no treatment was occurring within the tank.

It was decided to replace the failed sewage treatment plant with a new treatment system, which would be located in a more discreet area of the park.

Taking into account all of the site requirements, Mantair engineers recommended the installation a 24PE Tricel sewage treatment plant with remote blower housing at this Surrey location.

As part of the project Mantair liaised with the Environment Agency and the local Building Control Department to obtain the relevant approvals for the installation.

Prior to any ancillary works commencing Mantair engineers scanned the proposed location of the new sewage treatment plant and areas where any excavations were taking place to ensure that no underground services were present.

The scope of the installation works included:
  • Exposing the existing foul drainage pipe work and diverting to the location of the new sewage treatment plant;
  • Installation of the sewage treatment plant in a suitably sized excavation, including for a concrete base and backfill;
  • Provision of an RCD protected power supply to the sewage treatment plant blower housing;
  • Installation of a new 110mm diameter discharge drain to the boundary ditch;
  • De-commissioning and filling-in of the failed sewage treatment plant;
  • Backfilling all excavations and leaving the area neat and tidy.

On completion of the ancillary works Mantair commissioned the new sewage treatment plant, including setting of air valves, checking all pipe work joints and viewing the discharge into the final discharge chamber.

We removed all machinery from site and left the grounds in a neat and tidy manner.  We revisited this Surrey location a month after the completed installation to dress the excavation area where the ground had sunk.
