When the owners of a property in the rural hamlet of Depden Green near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk needed a new sewage treatment plant, they called on the expertise of Mantair to provide an economical and reliable sewage treatment solution.
As Suffolk’s leading installer of sewage treatment plants, Mantair has installed waste water treatment solutions throughout the majority of villages and hamlets around Bury St Edmunds, including various installations on the National Trust’s Ickworth Estate.
At this Suffolk dwelling the existing septic tank system had failed, causing the drainage from the property to surcharge, leaving the homeowners with the expense of having their septic tank emptied on a weekly basis. It was the homeowners preference to have the existing tank replaced with a modern sewage treatment plant.
With the property having three bedrooms, Mantair engineers recommended in accordance with the British Water ‘Flows and Loads’ Code of Practice – 4, the installation of a six-person Clearwater sewage treatment plant. The effluent produced from the Clearwater system is clean enough to discharge directly into a natural watercourse. It was therefore agreed that the treated effluent would discharge into a boundary ditch.
Due to the receiving ditch not being maintained for several years it was necessary for the ditch to be graded prior to the installation of the Clearwater sewage treatment plant. Using ‘euro-mats’, Mantair engineers constructed a temporary protective pathway in the garden to ensure that the required machinery wouldn’t cause any damage to the lawn.
After the works on the boundary ditch were complete, Mantair engineers started on the installation of the sewage treatment plant. As with all underground septic tank and sewage treatment plant installations Mantair carries out, the tank was completely encased in concrete to ensure the structural integrity of the tank is not impaired and to prevent the potential of flotation.
Scope of the installation works included:
- Exposing the existing foul drainage pipework and installation of new drainage to the Clearwater sewage treatment plant;
- Complete installation of the Clearwater treatment plant in a suitably sized excavation and back-fill;
- Installation of the Secoh air blower within a remote blower housing and provision of an RCD protected power supply;
- Installation of the air main from the blower housing to the Clearwater sewage treatment plant;
- Installation of the pumping main from the Clearwater system to the boundary ditch, including for the installation of an inspection chamber.
On completion of the ancillary works, the Clearwater sewage treatment plant was commissioned including the setting of the air control valve and viewing the discharge into the final inspection chamber.
During the project Mantair engineers took all the necessary measures to ensure minimal disruption to the property and its surroundings.
